Great Operatic Arias, Vol. 1 - Bruce Ford

The music in this recital embraces Italian, German and French repertoire, offering a wealth of melodic material. Naturally, several of the arias on this album exploit repertoire in which Bruce Ford shines. The popular Una furtiva lagrima (how wonderful to hear this well-known aria in English - it’s like  hearing it for the first time!), the Rossini arias and duets (including a popular Barber of Seville aria and a rarity from Armida) and an aria from Die Entführung, all show his prowess in the bel canto repertoire. It will come as no surprise to admirers of this singer that he is equally at home in the French repertoire (he received great accalim for a recording of Auber’s Le domino noir): the inclusion of the "Aubade" from Lalo’s The King of Ys, and the Serenade from The Fair Maid of Perth are both unexpected highlights. Lionel’s charming aria from Martha and the exotic Song of the Hindu merchant, both make for additional delightful surprises, whilst Verdi is represented by Fenton’s love aria Dal labbro il canto estasiato (From these true lover’s lips ...) from his supreme comic masterpiece, Flastaff.

Reviews

"...This is a delightful recital by the up-and-coming tenor Bruce Ford... Ford has an admirable bravura technique, and dazzles in Finish this futile argument (Cesa di piu resistere)’ Other gems are a limpid ’None so rare, none so fair’ (M’appari)’ and a mellifluous Lakmé duet with Mary Plazas. Fine accompaniments by superb Geoffrey Mitchell Choir and the Philharmonia Orchestra. Excellent recorded sound... Recommended."
James Camner - Fanfare - July/August 1998

"... Bruce Ford is a well-trained singer, gifted with a voice of fine qulaity... his diction is clear and natural... The programme is an interesting one.... pleasures abound. The duet from Lakmé is a particularly happy choice, and beautifully sung... The orchestra play well, as one would expect especially when under the good direction of David Parry."
JBS - Gramophone Magazine - April 1998

"The Chandos disc of English language opera excerpts, sponsered by the Peter Moores Foundation, is by every measure a success... Ford’s voice is beautiful, his technique never less than solid, with impeccable enunciation and style. When called for, as in the rondo finale from Barbiere ... the tenor shows spectacular coloratura facility. The recorded sound is superior... David Parry leads enthusiastic accompaniment ..."
James Camner - Opera News - 1 September 1998

"...His Mozart [Ford] (from The Seraglio) is fine, his Rossini (the arias from The Barber of Seville that nine out of ten tenors can’t manage) is good... watch out in the duet from Delibes’s Lakmé for the Irish soprano Mary Plazas: she sounds like a young Valerie Masterson, and from me praise doent comuch higher."
Classic FM Magazine - April 1998

"English language, world standard - sung by a light lyric tenor of real qulaity."
Michael Scott Rohan - Classic CD - March 1998

"...The American tenor Bruce Ford confirms his reputation as a Rossinian by getting his flexible voice around Almaviva’s last-act aria from The Barber of Seville, generally omitted because of its difficulty. He also revels in famous pieces from Mozart’s Seraglio, Donizetti’s Elixir of Love and Verdi’s Falstaff (Fenton’s aria) and the Song of the Indian Merchant from Rimsky-Korsakov’s Sadko..."
