Whilst the first album of Grainger’s works for wind orchestra (CHAN 9549) was concerned primarily with arrangements of folk song, this second volume focuses mainly on original works for wind orchestra, including three of his longest compostitions for this medium.
Grainger’s interest in band music was certainly an important aspect of his military life; Grainger served in the US army from June 1917 to January 1919, but his interest in band music remained with him the rest of his life. He often added to his wind compostions colourful percussion intruments such as glockenspiels, marimbas, xylophoncs and bells, which give them a distincr flavour. His prowess in this genre is well conveyed on this new recording.
