CHAN 10045

|
This is the first
of a number of recordings of Prokofiev’s music to be released
by Chandos this year to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the composer’s
death.
The disc contains
the only available recordings of Prokofiev’s Sonata for solo cello
and Andante from the unfinished Concertino, Op. 132.
Alexander Ivashkin
is one of today’s most distinguished cellists.Though his repertoire
is varied, he particularly champions twentiethcentury composers
and has collaborated with such luminaries as Cage, Penderecki,
Schnittke, Pärt, Shchedrin and Gubaidulina.
Tatyana Lazareva
was born in 1977 in Moscow into a family of musicians. Her father
is the well-known conductor, Alexander Lazarev and her mother,Tamara
Lazareva, is a pianist. She gave her first public engagement at
the age of eleven and now tours internationally.
This disc was recorded
in the Maly Hall of the Moscow Conservatory, the historic venue
where all the first performances of Prokofiev’s works for cello
and piano took place.

REVIEWS
Alexander Ivashkin is a highly respected interpreter of Prokofiev’s
works:
‘…an ardent
and sensitive exponent of the piece.’
Gramophone on CHAN
9989 (Symphony-Concerto etc.)
‘Ivashkin has
an imposing sound and convincing technique, even on the last bars,
where the cellist is called upon to play a rapid figure in the
range of a violin. His agitated entrance in the second movement
is perfect. With its subtle understanding of the interplay between
soloist and orchestra, and among sections of the orchestra, this
recording is a wonderful addition to the Prokofiev catalogue.’
Fanfare on CHAN
9989 (Symphony-Concerto etc.)
‘It would be
hard to imagine a better advocate for these works than Ivashkin,
a cellist with a mission to enlarge our knowledge of Soviet-era
music. His rich tone could have been made for Prokofiev’s lush
melodic writing, and he brings the music vividly to life with
the additional rhythmic crispness of his playing in the more bravura
passages.’

This premiere recording

Verhulst’s highly
romantic music is reminiscent of that of Schumann and Mendelssohn,

REVIEWS
Matthias Bamert and the
Residentie Orchestra The Hague have received high praise for their
series of music by Dutch composers:
‘Matthias Bamert has infused
such joy and commitment into these performances that they are
well-nigh self-recommending, and the Hague environs suffuse the
music-making with a warm glow that quite complements the string
textures. The orchestra plays with a fervour and spontaneity that
really makes this music come alive.’
American Record Guide on CHAN
9952 (Hol, Symphonies Vol. 2)
‘Admirable performances and
a very clean recording make a strong case for this intriguing
Dutch late romantic.’
International Record Review on CHAN
9884 (Dopper,Vol. 1)
‘Matthias Bamert is just the
man for such material… The Haag players would appear to be enjoying
themselves: the music bounces along in the faster movements and
glows with real warmth in the slower ones.’

‘All the
finest qualities of a Purcell Quartet performance are also represented
in these performances – the warmth of the violin playing, the
attentiveness of the cello and the professionalism of the continuo;
the marvellously judged tempos, undertaken with a rare blend of
decisiveness and delicacy; but above all, their cheerful, unfettered
collective spirit… Whether by dint of their boundless imagination
or their unquestioned musical integrity, the Purcell Quartet continues
to win the admiration of listeners.’
Gramophone
‘The Purcell

bass lines, these performances abound with energy and intelligence.’

Johann
Adolph Scheibe
(1708–1776)
Sinfonias
Concerto
Copenhagen
Andrew Manze
|
|
This CD of works
by comparatively unknown composer Johann Adolph Scheibe was well
received on its original release, and is now available at mid-price
for the first time.
This is the only
available recording of this repertoire.
Concerto Copenhagen,
or CoCo, is Denmark’s largest early music ensemble, specialising
in music from the baroque and classical eras played on period
instruments.
Scheibe is an interesting
representative of the period between baroque and classicism. He
broke with what he believed to be the starchy superficiality of
the baroque style and strove, in his work, for a new directness
and simplicity. His music, with its emphasis on melody, anticipates
classicism and even hints at romanticism.

REVIEWS
‘The Concerto
Copenhagen offers spirited and well-paced original instrument
performances in excellent sound. An enjoyable disc to be recommended
to those interested in the byways of a great transitional period
in music.’
Fanfare
‘…the playing
is accomplished and captures the pungencies of Scheibe’s writing
for woodwinds, brass and timpani with particular clarity, in superbly
vivid sound. Scheibe is an interesting composer worth discovering,
and collectors of early orchestral music will find this programme
a revelation.’
American Record Guide
‘…the Concerto
Copenhagen… give a fine performance, clear and full of energy,
and manage to extract a good deal of expression from fairly subtle
gradations in dynamics. Both the group and the music they play
make this a CD well worth investigating.’

A message from
Sviatoslav Prokofiev
In the fiftieth
anniversary year of my father’s death, I hope very much that this
CD will reach and engage as many listeners as possible. It should
prove appealing particularly to those who already know a little
of Prokofiev’s music, but who can here explore many of his lesser-known
works, written both in the West and in Russia – ballet and film
music, symphonic and choral works, piano and violin concerti –
all bright testimony to Prokofiev’s talent and his incredibly
large and varied output. As a result of the Prokofiev 2003 celebrations
I am sure his public following will grow, as will his reputation
as one of the most performed composers of the twentieth century.
